Every industry has room for change. Nothing is meant to be static, after all, and growth is crucial to staying relevant and continuing to benefit an ever-changing world. The salon industry is no exception.
Last month, I talked about the leadership team’s vision casting party and our big goals for the next five years. One of our biggest goals is to become a leader in the industry in Indianapolis. I’m incredibly proud of the unique philosophies and practices that create the Peabody’s experience for our clients, and my hope is that by prioritizing our values and weaving them through our salon culture, we can be a part of helping the industry to evolve. This month, I want to share with you some of the key things we’re doing to move the salon industry forward.
Taking Care of (All of) You
We use the word “holistic” a lot at Peabody’s. But you might be wondering, What do they even mean by that?
When we say “holistic,” we’re not necessarily talking about herbs and essential oils (although we do have some fantastic, restorative products in our Emporium that you can check out). Instead, we mean the more literal definition of holistic – that is, aiming to benefit the whole person.
Treating the whole person is so important to me and the team, so we incorporate holistic wellness into both our staff training and our client relationships. From the moment our pros begin their career at Peabody’s, their training includes technical practices like cuts and color, but it also includes business training, like branding and financial education. We’ve even had a speaker come in to teach our staff about physical and mental balance in the workplace. I want to make sure I am setting my team up for success in all areas of their career, and I acknowledge that success means feeling confident in who you are as a person, as a professional, and as a stylist. If one part of who you are is suffering, it can affect the other areas of your life, and it’s hugely important to me to respect and care for my team so they have the space to be their best selves.
It’s All Relational
This holistic focus is woven into our client relationships, too. Not only is everyone’s hair different, but also, everyone’s day-to-day life is different. With this in mind, it’s my team’s job to provide a service that aligns with your process, style, and personality and makes you feel awesome both inside and outside the salon.
How do we prepare for this task? It’s simple: we listen to you.
Our primary goal at Peabody’s is to make you feel seen, so the first thing we do is talk to you about your needs and get to know you as a person so we can set you up for success once you leave the chair. We talk through our styling process so you know exactly what’s going on because we don’t want any surprises. At Peabody’s, the client-stylist relationship is a collaborative and communicative one, because how you feel at the end of your appointment is the most important part of the process. For that reason, salon culture is another key part of the Peabody’s Pros training so our team can be fully prepared to create a personalized and welcoming experience for each client.
Styled By Person, Not By Pronoun
Your style is a very personal thing, so how could we possibly pigeonhole our services into “mens” and “womens” categories? We’ve eliminated all gender labels from our service list to make sure you can receive the customized treatment you want from our team. The mission of Peabody’s is to help our clients discover beauty and confidence in their own authentic way, and by taking away the limitations of gendered services, we’re keeping the world of beauty open to all types of personal expression.
Just like the industry is not meant to be static, neither are our employees. As part of the Peabody’s team, our employees are provided with regular opportunities to expand their education and stay up on the latest trends. This includes:
- Classes with product reps to learn more about the products we use
- Independent education days for stylists to own their learning and teach each other new techniques
- One-on-one mentorship with the leadership team to foster an environment of growth and support
As the industry evolves, it’s important that my team is knowledgeable about the latest techniques and best culture practices. This means investing in the growth of our team to make sure they can keep providing top-level experiences for you.
Looking to the Future
I am so excited to see where the industry goes over the next five years. It is awesome to be a part of the growth of the salon industry, and as a team, we are working hard to use these practices and philosophies to help move salon culture forward. From our little corner of Mass Ave, I believe we can do our part to promote amazing growth.
